“My journey into healthcare has been one filled with a passion for making a difference in people’s lives.”
Today (1 March 2024) is Overseas NHS Workers Day, celebrated nationally to recognise the extraordinary contribution that people who have migrated to the UK have made whilst working in the NHS.
Ahmad Al Jammal, Senior Heart Failure Nurse at Solent NHS Trust, reflects on his time in the NHS since joining in January 2023.
“My journey into healthcare has been one filled with heart, dedication, and a genuine passion for making a difference in people’s lives. Fast forward through a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the Lebanese American University (LAU), I found myself pursuing a Master’s in Adult Gerontology at the American University of Beirut (AUB).
“In my current position, my daily responsibilities encompass coordinating the treatment plans for heart failure patients, conducting initial assessments, and actively collaborating with patients and their families. In this role, I can shape clinical decisions and ensure the seamless execution of discharge plans. It's a position that calls upon my leadership skills and diagnostic reasoning expertise to contribute to the wellbeing of those under my care.
“Before landing here, amidst global challenges, I undertook a vital role of implementing COVID-19 safety measures in refugee camps as a Community Health Registered Nurse at Humedica in Lebanon. This involved engaging in triage, maintaining accurate record-keeping, and establishing collaborative efforts with various organizations for referrals and medical services, all of which seamlessly integrated into my daily routine.
“And you know what? All my efforts haven't gone unnoticed. During my years as a nursing student, in 2016, Lebanese American University honoured me with the Shake Ketefian Award, acknowledging my compassion, clinical reasoning, and professional communication. The subsequent year brought the Inspirational Nursing Student Award, recognising my ongoing commitment to the nursing profession and exceptional leadership as the president of the nursing club.
“Beyond the hustle, I've actively embraced leadership roles, transitioning from Vice President of the Nursing Club at LAU to Vice President of the Lebanese Nursing Student Association. My commitment to continuous learning is evident in my participation in esteemed professional organisations such as the Heart Failure Association (HFA), Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (ACNAP), and British Society of Heart Failure (BSH).
“Away from the charts and stethoscopes, I find joy in camping, hiking, swimming, and cooking – the little things that make life colourful. Being fluent in both Arabic and English helps me connect with a diverse patient population, adding a personal touch to the care I provide.
“So, there you have it – not just a CV but a story of a guy who's driven by heart, passion, and a genuine desire to bring a positive change to the healthcare world. If you're an overseas nurse dreaming of making a mark, peek into my journey – it might just be the inspiration you're looking for!”
